Originally, this airport was known as the Dorval International airport. The Mirabel airport had competition from the Dorval airport. They were very close together. However, neither airport was doing very well at the time. Both airports had lost passengers due to jets that could fly longer, there by bypassing these two airports. In 2004, the Mirabel airport shut down operations and so the Dorval began to pick back up. During this time, plans to rename the airport were underway. Although, there was opposition for the new name, it still passed and became the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International airport. It was named after the late Canadian prime minister. The objection, was because at one time he had tried to shut down that same airport. However, because of humanitarian aid, which Canada provided during the 9/11 incident and the Haiti earthquake, it was agreed upon to give the new combined airports, a new name.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport is also known as the YUL Airport. The YUL airport side is located about twelve miles from down town Montreal and in Quebec Province of Canada. This airport is one of the third busiest airports. The Trudeau International Airport YUL is now the hub to Air Canada.
